Fertiliser is food for plants – it contains nutrients that help them grow, flower and renew.
Unlike plants in flowerbeds, container plants aren’t able to access nutrients from the soil in the ground, so we have to take more care to ensure they’re getting all the nutrients they need.
Fertiliser comes in different forms – the most common is in compost soil that’s rich with nutrients and can just be added to the top of your plants.
You can also buy liquid plant food, where you add a few drops into your watering can once a fortnight or so, or slow-release pellets that last a few months.
Remember to start lightly fertilising during winter months, as that’s when the plant is growing, and continue through to the spring.
