Where to plant
Choosing the right spot is important for your Spiraea to thrive with the right amount of space and sun.
Here is a care guide for growing African lily:

STEP 1
Prepare your new Spiraea
Unpack your gift as soon as you can, it might be thirsty for some water (if the soils dry) and will be missing the light!

STEP 2
Give it space and room to grow
When considering a spot for your plant, choose somewhere that is at least an inch wider than the pot all the way round.
In a few years, your Spiraea can grow up to 1.2m height and 1m spread.

STEP 3
Give it some sun
Your Spiraea loves to be anywhere in the garden and with sun or partial shade.
Plants that like the sun will enjoy sunny areas that warm up during the day. Southern facing gardens receive the most sun, and will suit plants that won’t frazzle in the heat. You can work out which way your garden faces with a compass (there’s one on your phone) which will point towards North.

Step 4
Check your soil
Soil type differs from garden to garden. Your Spiraea will be happiest if your soil is like any of these:
moist, well-drained soil, whether it’s slightly acidic or alkaline
The texture and consistence of your soil is important also as it will determine the level of nutrition and drainage. If you think your soil might be the wrong type for your Spiraea, you could plant it in a pot or container instead!

Step 5
Position in border
Picking the right spot to plant in a border affects how well Spiraea will grow and how the border will look overall.
Your Spiraea will be best towards the middle or back of your border. Compact types work well near the front or as low hedging.
Care for your Spiraea
By following these care tips, your Spiraea will thrive and provide you with beautiful flowers all season long.
-
Watering
Learn: Watering plantsWater regularly in the first season to help roots establish.- Once established, only water in prolonged dry spells or if grown in containers.
-
Pruning
Learn: PruningSpring-flowering spiraea: prune immediately after flowering, cutting back flowered stems to new buds.- Summer-flowering spiraea: prune in early spring, cutting all growth back to around 30cm
-
Fertillising
Learn: FertillisingApply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in spring after pruning.- Container-grown spiraea benefits from a liquid feed monthly in summer.
-
Pests & Diseases
Learn: Protect from bugsGenerally pest-free, but can be prone to powdery mildew if under stress (e.g. drought or poor soil).- Ensure good air circulation and adequate watering in dry weather to help prevent mildew.
-
Protect
Learn: ProtectSpiraea is fully hardy and generally needs no special winter protection.- In very cold climates, a layer of mulch can help protect roots from frost.
